What is addiction treatment?

Dr. Williams has the training, expertise, and compassion to help you break free from addiction. She welcomes patients with open arms and treats each person with respect.

Opioids, including heroin, hydrocodone, codeine, and fentanyl, have habit-forming qualities. Often you’re prescribed these medications for legitimate reasons, such as following surgery or trauma or to manage chronic pain.

If you feel the urge to continue taking it, even when the original reason for the medication has resolved, you may have developed an addiction. Addiction treatment can help you break free from substances that have a hold on you.

Who benefits from addiction treatment?

The signs that a person has an addiction and could use treatment include:

  • Taking more pills than are prescribed
  • Not being able to stop taking substances
  • Physical agitation
  • Poor decision-making and abandoning responsibilities
  • Depression and irritability
  • Anxiety attacks
  • Low motivation

Other signs of addiction are withdrawal symptoms when you try to stop taking a substance, like vomiting, sweating, shaking, chills, pain, or insomnia.

Addiction can cause a person to do almost anything to obtain a substance. They usually suffer challenges at work, with family, or in social situations.

How does addiction treatment work?

Dr. Williams offers Suboxone®, a unique medicine with the active ingredients buprenorphine and naloxone. The medication works on the same parts of the brain that cause opioid addiction. By closely monitoring your use and dosage of Suboxone, Dr. Williams can help you overcome addiction.

Suboxone attaches the receptors in the brain that attract opioids. When these receptors are full, it reduces your cravings for opioids, easing the effects of withdrawal. The medication also shuts down the opioid receptors in your brain so you don’t feel the effects of opioid drugs.

Is addiction treatment safe?

Dr. Williams monitors you closely while you’re on Suboxone so you have little chance of overdose or relapse. She’ll ensure you take Suboxone only as prescribed.

Most patients take Suboxone for 1-2 years. During this time, you’ll learn new habits and make lifestyle changes that help you manage stress and pain without drugs.
